Communication and Culture | Race, Gender, and Representation
C412 | 1079 | Naomi Rockler
This course will examine the relationship between media representation
of gender, race, class, and sexual orientation and societal power
relationships surrounding these issues, especially in U.S. culture.
Throughout the course, we will examine how representations often
maintain, but sometimes challenge, gender, racial, class, and sexual
hierarchies. This will be a highly participatory course designed to
help students develop a more sophisticated vocabulary and analytical
skills for examining representations of various groups of people in
the media. Topics will include historical and contemporary
representations of African-Americans and other racial minorities,
Whiteness studies, the objectification of women in the media, teenage
girls and popular culture, historical and contemporary representations
of gender, and the current increase of representations of sexual
minorities in the media.
