Media, markets and democracy in Asia
The goal of this course is to systematically and thematically
investigate the various forms of media and ideological control in
Asia. Acknowledging that repression is fast becoming an obsolete
strategy of control, we will investigate how market, privatisation,
professionalism (of journalism) and cultural nationalism have become
the latest tools of government. We will focus on the debate of Asia
Values, Asian Journalism and Asian Democracy and how culture might be
sued to deter pluralism and legitimisze certain types of government,
market and journalistic practices.
