College Of Arts and Sciences | Clocks, Cars, and Composers
S103 | 0046 | Hawkes, C.
What effect did the invention of photography, the light bulb, an
accurate clock have on musicians? What difference did it make
whether they were living in a monarchy or a democracy or under a
dictator? This course will examine specific composers from the 14th
to the 20th century who broke free from prevailing traditions and
were forward looking. We will seek to understand how they were
products of their time and place. Our sources for discussions will
be recorded music, live concerts, readings about the composers (and
otherís reactions to them), and films.
