Education | Examining Self as Teacher
F200 | 5435 | Fritz Lieber
Introduction and Goals
This course is an opportunity for you to explore the discipline and
profession of teaching. I hope you will have a fair idea, by the end
of the semester, what it means to be a teacher, and whether you want
to pursue teaching as a career.
An Educational Understanding
To be a teacher and to be a student in a classroom presumes a certain
educational (and perhaps even spiritual) undertaking. I want to try
to make that undertaking an understanding. That is, I want you to
know what I expect. If you remain in the course, I assume you share
my expectations.
"I expect us to help each other learn about ourselves and about
teaching.
"I expect us to have fun.
"I will listen to you and respect you, and I expect you to
reciprocate.
"I will be genuine and try to understand you, and I expect you to be
genuine and try to understand each other and our work.
"I will challenge you to think, feel, and express yourselves.
"I expect you to challenge yourselves to think, feel, and express
yourselves.
"I will give you a fair and frequent idea of your progress.
"I expect you to examine yourselves, and give me a fair and frequent
idea of your own progress.
"I expect you to participate openly, honestly, and adventurously as a
community of learners.
Examinations and Papers
There are no examinations or quizzes in this course. You will write,
as assigned, a one-page abstract and one-page lesson plan for each
reading. These one-page papers are due at the beginning of each class
period. No late papers will be accepted. The abstract is a summary
in which you state the main points of the reading in a coherent
narrative. The lesson plan is an outline (or, if you choose, a
narrative) of your plan to teach the readings (including, as you see
fit, instructional goals, strategies, time to be taken, audience,
materials needed, etc.). During the last week of the course, you will
turn in a three-page assessment of yourself as a teacher. You will
receive a separate written explanation of this paper.
Text
The only text for the course is a course packet, available at T.I.S.
Bookstore, entitled F200 Examining Self as Teacher, Indiana
University, Fall 2002.
Teaching Exercises
You will each have several opportunities to teach the class. These
opportunities will be ten-minute exercises in which you teach the
class something from the day's reading, or something of your own
choosing.
Field Experience
I hope we will have a 5-week field experience in which you will spend
two hours per week in an elementary school. The field experience is
an opportunity for you to observe and participate in an actual
classroom. You will keep a weekly journal of your field experience.
I will give you more details of the fieldwork requirements as they
develop.
Assessment and Absences
Your grade is based on papers (abstract, lesson plan, and
self-assessment), teaching exercises, and field experience. The
division of points is as follows:
Papers 60%(abstract and plan = 2 pts. each; assess = 4pts.)
Teaching Exercises 15%
Field Experience 25%
Your have two unexcused absences. Other absences must be documented.
