TOPIC: CURRENT ISSUES IN COLLEGE LIFE AND COLLEGE SPORTS
In this course we will explore the current controversies surrounding college life and college sports, e.g. do students drink too much, do intercollegiate athletic programs help or hinder their universities? Our main textbooks will be Sport in Contemporary Society, edited by D. Stanley Eitzen, Sports in America: Opposing Viewpoints, edited by William Dudley, and Beer & Circus, written by the course instructor (students will be able to purchase the book at a deep discount). We will also use a TIS packet of readings on the topic.
Student responsibility in the course includes a class presentation, a number of short papers and quizzes, a mid-term exam, and a major research paper.
