L391 is an upper division English Literature course designed to introduce adult readers to young adult literature. We will read primarily contemporary young adult fiction as well as critical material, and students will read five additional novels for an independent reading project. Topics to be explored will revolve around the selection of literature and include: notions of adolescence and young adulthood; the role of imagination and fantasy in the lives of adolescents and their relationship to literacy both textual and cultural; conceptions of literacy; and censorship. Work for the course includes three critical papers (one linked to the independent reading project); several short response papers; a group presentation; and occasional pop quizzes.
Possible course texts include: The Giver; Holes; Artemis Fowl; Harry Potter; Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry; A Wrinkle in Time; The Last of the Great Wangdoodles; Walk Two Moons; The Bridge to Terabithia; and Summerland.
