Topic: DO WE NEED ART? THE ROLE OF ART AND THE ARTIST IN AMERICAN
CULTURE

The arts would seem powerless to deal with the destruction caused by
recent terrorist attacks, but many have turned to them to assuage
grief and anger. We will begin this course by analyzing how art has
been discussed in conjunction with recent events and then examine how
Western conceptions of art and the artist have developed. We will
compare these Western conceptions with those of other cultures, and
then conclude by asking if and how art can build a basis for unity in
a multicultural society. The course will stress critical reading and
writing skills through the analysis of written and visual texts.
