Fine Arts | Art & Politics - Topics in Art History
A490 | 2064 | Unger
Above section for UG only.
This course will focus on the different ways by which art was used to
convey political messages. Starting with fifteenth century examples such
as Van Eyck's Ghent Alterpiece and Ghirlandaio's Sassetti Chapel, moving
into the modern age with such works as Liberty Leading the People by
Delacroix and Rue Transnonain by Daumier, we will examine how works of art
were manipulated in order to convey topical messages. Among the important
issues to be considered will be the emergence in the nineteenth century of
politically oriented artists who used art as a vehicle for expressing
their own political views.
