Fine Arts | Puzzles in Iconography - Problems in Early Christian Art
A621 | 2074 | Kleinbauer
Taking as its springboard Thomas Mathews' The Clash of Gods, revised ed.
1999, this course will examine major problems and issues posed by specific
works of art in the period from the third to the sixth century, especially
the issue of the impact of imperial imagery on images of Christ in
isolated and narrative contexts in both the Latin West and the Greek East.
Other issues will include the relationships between Mithraism and
Christianity, the cult of Isis and Mary, and the sexuality of Jesus as
depicted in certain works of art. Each student will make a seminar
presentation and submit a formal written version of it near the end of the
semester. A reading knowledge of French or German is absolutely required.
