Folklore | Systems of Meaning: Musical Cultures
F527 | 2304 | Burnim
This course is designed to introduce students of ethnomusicology and
related fields of study to a range of ideologies, processes, and
patterns which define meaning in discreet musical cultures across the
globe. Students will explore the concept of music as culture by
examining topics of historical and contemporary discourse in cross-
cultural perspective. Students will consider how people draw upon
cultural signs, symbols, values, beliefs and behaviors to shape,
reshape and define musical experience. Featured musical styles,
traditions, genres, and performers will reflect the specializations
of the ethnomusicology faculty—African, African American, Chinese,
Middle Eastern and Mexican American musics. This broad geospatially-
oriented cultural competence often is expected of ethnomusicologists
hired to teach in academic settings.
