This course centers on translating texts, mainly from works of
literature and journalism, from French to English ("version" for
native speakers of English) and from English to French ("theme" for
native speakers of English). One hour per week will also be devoted to
practical exercises from the text book Apprendre à traduire (V.
Rodgers). The second hour will be devoted to translations of texts.
Students write their translations on the blackboard and class members
compare their translations with the translations on the board. The
goal of the course is to develop translation skills as well as a
heightened appreciation for the differences and difficulties between
French and English. The course will be conducted in French and
English. Final grade is based on assignments and progress during the
course.
