Prerequisite: G300 with a minimum grade of C-.
Recommended: G330.
This course is a study of German cultural history from ca. 1750 to
the present with a focus on the idea of political freedom. We will
examine a number of literary, philosophical, and journalistic texts
as well as film and music for the way they represent civil liberty
and the proposed role of the individual in society as a whole. Since
conceptions of political freedom throughout modern German history
nearly always also included limitations based on race, gender, or
social class, our discussions will also address the groups that stood
to gain or were marginalized by particular models of the ideal state.
