Germanic Languages | German Film & Popular Kultur
G418 | 2694-2695 | Claudia Breger & F. Corey Roberts
Topic: German Love Stories
Prerequisite: G305 or G306.
In this course, we will study popular film culture in 20th century
Germany. Focussing on “love stories” from different periods and
political contexts, we will have the opportunity to talk about
changing concepts of gender and sexuality. At the same time, we will
discuss how these ‘private matters’ are implicated in ‘public
affairs’: While talking about love, the films negotiate historical
memories, political ideas, ethnic and national identities. Films
shown include: Harlan: Jud Süss, Marischka: Sissi, Beyer:
Königskinder, Fassbinder: Lili Marleen, Carow: Legende von Paul und
Paula, Dörrie: Männer, Färberböck: Aimee und Jaguar, Ataman: Lola und
Bilidikid, Stöhr: Berlin is in Germany.
