Spring 2003 -- G605 Special Topics in Language Teaching
Prerequisite: Two years of teaching at the College level or
Instructor's approval.
The course will begin with an introduction to the theory on teaching
reading and literature in a second language. Theory will be
interspersed increasingly with practice as we design materials for
teaching selected primary texts and the course will eventually
follow a workshop format. Texts will be selected by general
agreement of course participants and taken from the canon, from
those works typically taught at the undergraduate level, and from a
variety of genres and periods, with the main focus on contemporary
literature. We will also design materials for texts from other
fields, such as international business and journalism as well as at
least one film. Some sample teaching materials as well as those
designed by the group will be assembled on a course web site with
practical participation in the web design encouraged.
