S331 The Hispanic World I (3 credits)
Prerequisites: S310 or S311 or equivalent
This course will offer an introduction to the study of important
literary texts from Latin America. Readings will include a number of
short stories (by Jorge Luis Borges, Julio Corázar, José Donoso,
Isabel Allende), a novel by Gabriel García Márquez, a dramatic work,
and a selection of poetry from Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz to Pablo
Neruda. The close reading of these works and class discussions will
emphasize the literary, social, and historical contexts in which they
were written, genre characteristics and differences, and relevant
aspects of literary interpretation.
The specific aims of this course are: To sharpen the literary insight
of the students; to widen their cultural horizons; to improve their
abilities of reading comprehension, speaking and writing in Spanish.
Students will be evaluated on the basis of their participation in
class, written assignments, short essays, and two exams. The Course
will be taught in Spanish. Credit given for only two of the
