S331: The Hispanic World I (3 credits)
Prerequisite: S310 or S311 or equivalent

S331 will introduce students to Spanish American literature and
the culture this literature reflects. We will read works from three
genres: narrative, poetry and drama. We will emphasize narrative,
including short stories and a short novel. We will also seek to take
advantage of every opportunity afforded by our texts to observe and
comment on the influence of three cultures on the cultural and
literary formation of Spanish America: European, Native American
(indígena) and African.
In addition to Rosario Ferré's short novel Maldito amor, we will
read short stories by Juan Rulfo, Julio Cortázar, Horacio Quiroga and
others. Poets we will read include Nicolás Guillén, Octavio Paz,
Nancy Morejón, César Vallejo and Rubén Darío. Discussion, papers and
exams will all be in Spanish. Evaluation will be based on class
participation, two exams, a short paper, a brief oral presentation and
written homework assignments. Credit only given for two of the
following: S331, S332, S333
