SUBTITLE: "La España de hoy a través de su cine"
This course will survey the evolution and highlights of the Spanish
Cinema from 1975 to 2000, and will discuss how the Spanish society is
depicted in a series of Spanish movies from that period (from
directors Garci, Colomo, Trueba, Almodóvar, De la Iglesia, Amenábar,
Medem, Segura, etc.). The aim of the course is to draw a social and
cultural landscape of democratic Spain from its cinema, one of the
most widely recognized fields of Spanish modern culture.
The course will be based in the viewing of several Spanish movies
(one each week, as an average). Each film will be preceded by a class
presentation about it, and will be followed by a class discussion
about the most remarkable aspects of the movie.
Class discussion and assignments will be in Spanish. Most films will
be subtitled in English. Course evaluation will be highly based on
class participation and discussion. There will be a final exam.
Besides that, every student must write a "course journal", in which
they must reflect all their thoughts and comments about all the
movies. This journal will be a major part of the coursework, and will
provide a significant part of the final grade.
This course carries Culture Studies credit and is highly recommended
for students who plan to go on the Overseas Studies Madrid Academic
Year program.
