Topic: Power, liberation, and anxiety in 20th-century Spain
Instructor: Professor Josep Sobrer
Description:
We will study the theme of power and how it relates to issues of
anxiety (and particularly male anxiety) and liberation/transformation
in literary works spanning the twentieth century in Spain. A secondary
focus of inquiry will be how the works analyzed embrace or reject
humor. Authors and works to read are:
Valle Inclán's La Marquesa Rosalinda, a theatrical farce in verse
first performed in 1912.
Unamuno's Tres novelas ejemplares y un prólogo, short fiction from
1920.
García Lorca's La casa de Bernarda Alba, a play from the mid 1930s.
MercP Rodoreda's La Plaza del Diamante, a 1962 novel.
Quim Monzó's La isla de Maians, short stories of the post-modern 80s.
Carme Riera's En el último azul, a historical novel published in 1994.
