S512	Theory and Criticism

MW 8:00am – 9:15am/section #4147/3 cr./Ballantine Hall 317

This course will provide a survey of all the major trends and
movements of 20th-century literary theory and critical theory, from
Russian Formalism to New Historicism and beyond.

The course will be focused in the reading and commentary of a series
of texts representative of the theoretical trends examined; the
instructor will provide a general introduction to each of those
trends.

This is a seminar-style course. The students are expected to read
all the reading assignments carefully and critically, and to
participate in class discussions. Also, all students are expected to
keep a reading journal with all their reflections, comments and
afterthoughts from their class lectures: this reading journal will
be handed in to the instructor at two stipulated dates along the
semester.

All students will elaborate a written essay in which they must do a
practical exercise of literary criticism based in one of the
theoretical frameworks presented and discussed along the course.
Topic choice should be discussed with the instructor.

The final grade will be the result of the following:

- participation in class discussion (20%)
- reading journal (20%)
- written essay (30%)
- final exam (30 %)

The course will be conducted in Spanish. Most of the readings will
be in English.
