The Ottoman Empire stood at the crossroads of three continents -
Europe, Asia, and Africa - and was the single most important Islamic
power in early modern times and well into the twentieth century.
Areas that had been once under Ottoman rule still fill the
international news of our own times, from Bosnia and Yugoslavia to
Israel/Palestine and Iraq. This course will present a survey of the
history of the Ottoman Empire, from the beginnings of the empire
around 1300, its rise and its classical age in the 15th and 16th
centuries, the age of European dominance and colonization, to the
demise of the Ottoman Empire after World War I.
