History | American History I
H105 | 2772 | Friedman

This course traces the evolution of American society and thought
from the early 17th century through the Civil War. We shall focus
on the ways in which social-cultural and political-economic
developments influenced the thoughts and emotions of Americans,
particularly on the local and regional level. People’s feelings and
perceived realities shall be crucial. Much emphasis shall be placed
on emerging patterns of race and gender relationships. All
examinations shall be of the essay variety. They shall require
interpretation and analysis of major developments rather than the
rehash of small details and shall not have “right” answers.
