Above section open to freshmen and sophomores only

The course is designed to explore the history of the United States
from the end of the Civil War to the present. During these years,
our nation underwent a transformation from a predominantly rural
society into one of the most powerful industrial and political
nations. Special emphasis will be given to American society,
culture, and politics. We will investigate events in such a way as
to see how and why they occurred and the ultimate consequences of
these events.

There will be three in-class midterms (20% each for a total of 60%);
one comprehensive final (30%); and a grade for attendance and
participation (10%). The text will be: "Out of Many", Vol. 2,
brief third edition.
