This course will survey the history of the British Isles from Roman
times through the English Civil War of the seventeenth century, with
particular attention to the issues of national unification, cultural
diversity, church-state relations, and the relationship of Britain
to continental Europe and the Americas. Students will be expected to
attend regularly, do all assigned readings, write several short (5-7
page) papers, and take essay exams.
