History | Colloquium Early Modern West European History
H615 | 2875 | Field

From the Enlightenment through the early twentieth century, a number
of scholars created a new historical genre, cultural history. In
the colloquium we shall examine in detail a number of these
scholars, including Voltaire, Jacob Burckhardt, Karl Lamprecht,
Johan Huizinga, and Ortega y Gasset. We shall also take up the
methodological questions raised by Wilhelm Dilthey in his "Patterns
and Meaning of History". Toward the end of the course we shall
examine the work of some recent cultural historians, as they relate
to the earlier work. Weekly short analytical papers will be
required. There will be no final.
