Honors | War and Peace & Brothers Karamazov
H203 | 0005 | A. Durkin

9:30-10:45am MW PV 270

The course focuses on the masterworks of two of the major novelists
of the nineteenth century, Lev Tolstoi and Fedor Dostoevskii. In
different ways, each of them in his major novel creates a new form of
the novel, while at the same time addressing issues that beset Russia
in the nineteenth century, both the "questions of the day" and the
"accursed questions" of national and personal destiny. After
consideration of selected short works by each author, the course will
devote attention to a detailed reading and analysis first of War and
Peace and then of The Brothers Karamazov in their cultural,
historical, and literary contexts.
