This course provides a general overview of African languages and
linguistics. As an introduction to the study of language in Africa, it
will examine the following areas:
-language distribution (linguistic geography);
-genetic classification of African languages;
-typological features, including tonal phenomena and vowel harmony,
noun class systems and agreement, verbal morphology, ideophones;
-effects of language contact (pidgins, creoles, etc.).
