Linguistics | Prosodic Organization
L710 | 3064 | Dr. Ken de Jong

3 Credits

Prerequisites: A basic background in phonetics, such as would be
gotten by taking L541 (Introduction to Phonetics) or a similar course,
or permission of instructor (KDEJONG@INDIANA.EDU).

In this seminar, we will develop lines of research which will advance
our understanding of issues related to prosodic structure. We will
begin the semester with an outline of particular topics internal to
the understanding of natural language prosody, such as 1) the
structure and meaning of English intonation, 2) the relationship of
phonological phenomena, (such as segmental rules) to intonational
structure, 3) detecting and diagnosing phrasing in different
languages, and 4) the structure and nature of the syllable. The rest
of the semester will be determined by students interests, but can
include many areas of inquiry, including second language acquisition,
first language acquisition, syntactic parsing, and phonological
theory. Students will be required to develop a productive
understanding of the issues, so that they will be able to begin an
active research project relating to it. This course will entail that
students, besides presenting various papers in class, will develop a
research proposal and perhaps do ground-work for pilot work in their
area of study.
