Living-Learning Center | Performance of Violence in Culture
L220 | 0961 | Paul McGarity

This class explores several manifestations of violent behavior and
the role it plays in culture, identity, and
communication. “Violence” is a slippery term and can mean many
things to different people. How do we learn about it? Do we think
of it as a good? Bad? Is it ever justified? We will use many
sources: fiction, film, documentary, art, academia, music and of
course the world around us. We will look at a variety of locations:
US, Ireland, Mexico, Germany, Africa, and Ancient Rome. Violence is
a reality which we may never fully escape but we can try to
understand it better.

This course is open to all IU students.
