The last fifty years have seen the Middle Ages spring back to life in
new forms. With the blossoming of film and comic books as media, new
manifestations of this malleable time have come to grow beside the
art-work and literature that has been the more traditional ground for
medievalism. As a result, those who have recently appropriated the
Middle Ages have developed their own hybrid versions of the time of
Vikings, knights, ladies, and wizards. This course examines recent
appropriations of the Middle Ages within pop-cultural genres such as
pulp novels, comic books, movies, and games. Our ultimate object of
investigation is ourselves–a culture that produces these hybrid
medieval artifacts.

This course is open to all IU students.
