L290 | 7058 | Ashby, Steven

Class meets 5:45 - 8:25 pm, Thursdays, in the Student Building 150 on
March 27, April 3, 17, and 24. This course examines major strikes
and lockouts at Pittston, Firestone/Bridgestone, A.E. Staley, the
Detroit Newspapers, Hormel, and United Parcel Service. The course
analyzes these recent labor-management conflicts as a vehicle to
discuss the changing U.S. and global economy and the impact on
workers and unions; corporate strategies to break strikes; labor
strategies such as corporate campaigns and non-violent civil
disobedience; the future of labor-management cooperation; and
evolving public attitudes toward unions.
