This is a course on sociological issues concerning the diversity of
human sexuality.  Because sexuality is often taken for granted
as “human nature,” it is a perfect site for sociological
investigation.  As we will discuss, the meanings of sex are
constantly in flux, being worked out publicly and privately.
Through a sociological perspective, we will move beyond our taken-
for-granted assumptions about sexuality and will investigate these
meanings and their relationships to sexual behavior, attitudes, and
identities.  Topics that we will cover include: gender, sexual
orientation/preference, sexual behavior across the life-course
(including childhood sexuality), cross-cultural variation in sexual
behavior, sexual abuse, sex work, and atypical and paraphilic sexual
behaviors.
