Topic: In-depth Interviewing
The intent of this course is both to introduce students to the
basics of in-depth interviewing and to provide assistance to
students currently in the midst of in-depth interviewing projects.
We will learn from conducting research using in-depth interviewing,
sharing our experiences with the method with the class, and giving
classmates constructive feedback. We will talk with each other about
our findings, problems, topics, and research dilemmas in a variety
of ways – in full class discussion, in group discussion in and out
of class, with the instructor individually, and through written
feedback that you give to each other and provided by the instructor.
Reading will be a combination of programmatic statements about how
to do in-depth interviewing, published examples of work based on in-
depth interviewing, and the works-in-progress of the students in the
class. Course evaluation will be based class participation,
completion of a series of exercises, a project proposal, and a final
paper reporting progress on an in-depth interviewing project.
