Anthropology | Indians of Mexico & Central America
E340 | 0390 | Tucker

This course will explore the cultures of the indigenous peoples of
Mexico and Central America. While we will emphasize current contexts,
we will recognize historic processes of change that have profoundly
shaped the present. We will explore cultural, socioeconomic and
political issues of major concern to indigenous groups, including land
rights, intellectual property rights, political representation and
economic development. Special attention will be given to a few major
culture groups, such as the Maya of Guatemala, Zapotecs of Mexico, and
the Lenca of Honduras. Evaluation will be based upon a midterm exam,
several quizzes, class presentations and a brief research paper.
