Anthropology | Life Histories
E600 | 9657 | Clark

Ethnographers like working with life histories because of their
impact, readability and depth of insight. This time-honored
genre presents a deceptively simple, transparent opening for authentic
voices and experiences. Avant-garde approaches grapple with complex
questions of power and knowledge. We will read and discuss examples of
both, covering interviewing techniques, ethical issues of consent and
confidentiality, and editing strategies. We also consider what you
can learn from them and how. Class assignments include a journal, a
practice interview and three short essays. Graduate students will
write an analytic book review.
