C361: The Golden Age of Rome

The course is a survey of the city of Rome in the empire,
beginning with the rise of Octavian, later Augustus. The Aeneid of
Vergil and the Twelve Caesars of Suetonius are the class texts, and
we will supplement these heavily with study of the physical remains
of imperial Rome to study the propaganda efforts of the various
dynasties. There will also be additional e-reserve reading on the
individual monuments and topics.
This is an Intensive Writing course; there are no tests, but
rather writing assignments to complete the writing requirements.
