This course has two main goals. First, you will develop the tools to
engage in critical literary study of poetry, fiction, and drama.
Second, since this is an intensive writing course, you will
practice, and gain expertise in, writing about literature.
Some of the broader critical questions we will be exploring
throughout the semester are: What is literature? What is the purpose
of literature? How have literature and its definition changed over
the centuries? How has literary criticism changed? How can we
account for these changes, and what effects do these changes
evidence? We will explore possible answers to these and other
questions in class and in written assignments.
