Introduction to Fiction

1:00p-2:15p TR (20) 3 CR.

College intensive writing section. Open to Honors students only.

This writing-intensive course will serve as both an introduction to
fiction – novels and short stories – and to critical modes of
interpretation. We will look at how fiction constructs characters,
narrators and readers, and discuss the role of convention in
literature. Our organizing rubric will be “anxiety”: we will read
works that seem particularly interested in the psychological state of
anxiety and discuss the ways that anxiety may be represented, either
thematically or formally, in narrative. Authors may include Edgar
Allan Poe, Franz Kafka, Kate Chopin, Wallace Thurman, Samuel Beckett,
James Weldon Johnson, Flannery O’Connor, Ralph Ellison, and Margaret
Atwood (although these are subject to change).

Students are expected to come prepared to participate in class, to
write weekly response papers, and to complete (that is, write and
revise ) 3 or 4 formal papers (5-6 pages in length.)
