This course is designed to develop students' critical reading, thinking, and writing skills by focusing on one of the dominant features of contemporary culture: travel and tourism. We will look at representations of travelers and tourists in popular culture, including television, magazines, movies, and novels. The course will concentrate on encounters between tourists and various cultures and natural landscapes and how those encounters are constructed. As an extension of our discussion of travel, we will also look at the relationship between globalization and tourism. As the title suggests, this is a course that will continually ask questions of dominant ways of thinking and our own.
