This course will study the artistic movements of Realism,
and Impressionism  in the work of a selected number of artists
working in France in the period between 1848 and 1884 when the last
of the Impressionist exhibitions was held.  Both in the lectures and
in the assigned readings, artists will be considered in the light of
the cultural, theoretical and political forces which helped to
develop, sustain or thwart their oeuvre.

	Lectures and class discussions will revolve around visual
study of artists’ work as well as assigned readings dealing with the
theoretical writings that were at the heart of their approach.
