Fine Arts | African Contemporary Art - Problems in African Art
A650 | 2191 | McNaughton

This course will explore the rapidly expanding area of AFRICAN
CONTEMPORARY ART, the painting, sculpture, and mixed media creations
that are generating a whole new sub-discipline. We may even include
film. We will address several issues, such as:

what constitutes "contemporary" and how does it relate
to "traditional"

what are the subject matters, issues and goals of contemporary
African artists

what sorts of personal biographies do they have how are these
artists being promoted and how are they promoting themselves
how do we deal with African-born artists working abroad

what kinds of literature can we use to better understand this
important realm of art

what would we want to include in a course that introduces
undergraduates to Contemporary African Art

Discussion of readings, student presentations on artists, and a term
paper on an artwork, artist, or collection of artists will
constitute the class requirements.
