You’ve  seen  those African sculptures with nails all over.  You’ve
heard strange things about Voodoo.  It seems like magic, but its
actually a fantastic combination of science, ritual and art.  It
includes herbal medicine, a dramatic array of deities and spirits,
and a very interesting philosophy of how the world works and what
people can do in it.  These  traditions  are found throughout
Africa, and in places like Haiti, New Orleans, Miami, New York, and
Brazil.  Our class will explore them, as well as our own beliefs
about science and art.  And we will see some of the world’s most
dramatic and subtle artworks.
