The definition and design of research projects and the conduct and
reporting of research are central factors in graduate study, relevant
not only to the dissertation process but to the selection of courses,
the choice of a minor, the Ph.D. exam process, the preparation of
research proposals, and other aspects of your graduate career. This
course is designed to aid you in the planning of research and the
formulation of your research project within the broader context of
the research process as a whole, from the first articulation of your
research interests to the eventual publication of your research
results. Readings will be drawn from the literature on research
epistemology, design, methods, and proposals, and on the dissertation
process. Written work will include (but not necessarily be limited
to) a short and a long draft of a research proposal.
