This course will present a survey of Jewish history from the Middle
Ages to the twentieth century. The course will examine the relations
between Jews and non-Jews and the maintenance and development of a
Jewish identity in changing historical contexts. We will see how the
traditional medieval order gave way to a new order in the early
modern and modern periods, and we will examine how Jews responded to
the new challenges. Topics will include Jewish-Christian relations
in medieval and modern times, emancipation and Jewish responses to
emancipation, assimilation, antisemitism, the Holocaust and the
establishment of the modern State of Israel. Grades will be based
on two quizzes, a final exam, and two brief
papers.
