This course is an introduction to the scientific study of human
language.The course will progress through various aspects of
language from sound production and sound systems (phonetics and
phonology), word construction (morphology), sentence construction
(syntax), and meaning (semantics) to language change (historical
linguistics), language in society (sociolinguistics), language in
the brain (neurolinguistics), and language modeling (computational
linguistics).
By the end of the course students will be acquainted with methods of
linguistic analysis, have an understanding of how human languages
are alike and differ, and will have an informed perspective on
language issues that impact our society.
