Prerequisite: LING L103 or L303

A survey of the languages families of the world including their chief
phonological, grammatical, and typological characteristics,
geographical distribution and cultural setting, language death:
causes and characteristics. A review of the methods and evidence for
language grouping as well as possible causes for language diversity.
An examination of a selection of languages which differ areally and
typologically.  Each student will adopt a language for this purpose.
Grades based on exams and course projects.
