Linguistics | Bilingualism and Language Contact

This course looks at the various sociolinguistic and
psycholinguistic factors that come into play when language is used
by multi/bilingual individuals or by multilingual communities.
Specific topics which are covered include:
Code-switching and mixing
Language borrowing and interference
Language maintenance and shift
Language change as a result of contact (rather than internal
historical change)
Attitudes towards multi/bilingualism in individuals and
communities
We will consider various case studies for each of the topics, and
students may bring in examples as well.
