In this course we will be investigating syntactic change,
particularly from the standpoint of recent work in generative
diachronic syntax. Case studies in the "what, how, and why" of
syntactic change will come from the history of a wide range of
languages, among them English, French, Icelandic, Spanish, Welsh,
Bulgarian, and Chinese. As preparation for individual projects
(which may be on any language), we will get hands-on experience
finding, using, and interpreting various electronic data bases.
Prerequisite: Linguistics 543 or permission of instructor.
