Living-Learning Center | Community Theater
L100 | 9635 | Shawki

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to community theatre. We
will study how community theatres differ from other theatres, their role and
function within the community, their operation and funding, and opportunities
for volunteer work at community theatres. While the emphasis will be on
community theater in the United States, some attention will also be given to
community theatre in a few other countries and especially in developing
nations. We will explore the contribution of community theatre in African
countries in regard to community development, raising awareness of public
health issues, and promoting reconciliation. The course will involve readings,
discussion, informal talks with the staff of the Bloomington Playwrights Project
(BPP), and conversations with the cast and director of a play performed at the
BPP. In addition we will attend the rehearsals and one of the performances of
that play.
