Philosophy | Introduction to Ethics
P140 | 3526 | Tropman

This course is concerned with nature of morality. We will begin by
examining several accounts of what it is for an action to be right
or wrong. Among the questions we shall consider include the
following. Are moral standards relative to personal belief or
cultural preference? What is the connection, if any, between
morality and happiness? Are some actions morally right in and of
themselves? After examining these questions, we will look at some
contentious contemporary moral issues, such as the ethics of human
cloning, capital punishment, abortion, euthanasia, and assisted
suicide. Students will be asked to complete two exams, a final
examination, two papers, and weekly reading questions.
