P457: Forensic Psychology

This course will provide an overview of forensic psychology, focusing
on the application of clinical, social, and experimental psychology
as they relate to legally relevant issues such as criminal profiling,
eyewitness testimony, predictions of dangerousness, competence to
stand trial, and the insanity defense. The course is organized around
an actual homicide case, and topics covered will chronologically
follow the case from start to finish, covering psychological aspects
of the criminal act, police investigation, eyewitness testimony,
impact of media coverage, trial strategy, sentencing, parole, and
release decisions. In addition to original trial materials, course
readings include current federal and state legal materials, empirical
research articles, and relevant portions of legal treatises.
